Why Preparation Matters More Than the Paint Itself
The secret most decorators don’t want you to know
Ask any decorator what makes a great finish and they’ll talk about paint brands, brush quality, technique. They’re not wrong — these things matter. But they’re not the most important thing. Not even close. The most important thing — the thing that separates a finish that looks exceptional five years later from one that begins to fail within eighteen months — is what happens before the paint goes on. At Paintology, we dedicate approximately 70% of every project’s time to preparation. That often surprises clients. It shouldn’t.
What preparation actually involves
Preparation is not a single step. It’s a sequence: surface assessment to identify failures and moisture issues; filling using the right product for each application; sanding to create the correct profile; priming to seal bare surfaces and areas of porosity; caulking all junctions; and professional-grade masking and floor protection throughout. None of this is visible in the finished result. That’s precisely the point.
Why most decorators skip it
Preparation takes time. Time costs money. A decorator who skips half the preparation steps can finish a job significantly faster. The walls look identical on day one. It’s only over months and years that the difference becomes apparent — by which point the decorator is long gone. This is why the cheapest quote is almost never the most economical choice.
The Paintology approach
At Paintology, we don’t use preparation as a marketing differentiator. We use it because it’s the only honest way to achieve the standard of finish we’re proud to put our name to. If you’re planning a project and would like to understand our process, we’d love to talk.
